The Board administers The Trade
Union Act, The
Construction Industry Labour Relations Act, 1992 and The
Health Labour Relations Reorganization Act and The Public Service
Essential Services Act. These laws apply
to most unionized employees in Saskatchewan. They do not
generally apply to non-unionized employees or to employees,
unionized or otherwise, of companies which fall under federal jurisdiction
such as telecommunications companies or airlines.
The Board does not deal with labour standards issues such as hours of work, overtime, wages, vacation and maternity and parental leave. These issues are dealt with by the Labour Standards Branch of Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour. The Board does not deal with occupational health and safety issues such as refusals of unsafe work, hazardous substances and workplace accidents. These issues are dealt with by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour. The Board does not generally deal with issues of harassment or discrimination in the workplace. These issues are generally dealt with by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission. Board Membership The Board is headed by a full-time Chairperson and two full-time Vice-Chairpersons, all of whom are lawyers. The remainder of the Board comprises 18 part-time members, representing either employees or employers, who are paid on a per diem basis when their services are required. Hearings are conducted by 3 person panels including either the Chairperson or a Vice-Chairperson, a member representing employers and a member representing employees.
